For those who don't quite understand the American way of life I'll try and explain a bit of background info. At the end of summer term, the seniors at Senior High put the incoming freshmen (first years at Senior High) through "hazing" - a kind of ritual humiliation.
Dazed and Confused is set on just such a day and follows several groups of freshmen and seniors throughout the day and onto the next morning. All the characters seem almost exaggerated but there's at least one who you'll be able to identify with.
There's the conscience, the bitch, the pothead, the dick, the dresser, the cool dude, the intellectual, the hard man, the fresh young thing and the up-and-coming junior. All the characters that you get in real school life in other words.
The film just follows them through the day, switching from one group to the next, focussing on their problems and the friction between them. However this is done so well, and the young cast play their roles with so much conviction that you feel drawn into their world.
As one of the characters says, every other decade is good; the swinging sixties followed by the dull seventies. We've been through the tacky eighties so what's the rest of this decade going to be like? Some things in life will never change - school days are one of them. And at the end of the night, it's just the dawn of a new morning.
